Okay, I'll admit that I didn't consider "Gladiator" the best movie of 2000, but it did have it's merits, namely that it focused on plot rather than violence. Russell Crowe certainly did a good job as Maximus, and Joaquin Phoenix made a nasty Commodus. Although that was sort of the problem: the good guy was 100% good and the bad guy was 100% bad. It might have been a little better if there had been some gray area.
But other than that, it was a really good movie. Since we had just gone to Italy when the movie came out (we went for the millennium jubilee) it made the movie all the neater. I guess that you could say: the movies that we watch in life echo in our eternities.

Gladiator 2000 Full Movie HD 1080p. I love Gladiator, but remember being disappointed on first viewing in the theatre. Repeat viewing on VCR and especially DVD have confirmed its place as a classic. Gladiator isn't perfect. A fifteen minute trim could do it a lot of favours, and Joachim Phoenix is too much in certain scenes. On the other hand, its Crowe's finest hour, with good support from Oliver Reed and Richard Harris.
Scott's recreation of the second century Roman world is outstanding and ambitious. Battle scenes feel like a Vietnam movie, gladiatorial combat is fast and bloody. What really makes Gladiator work is Scott's commitment to a brutal world. People die, and life is unfair. This darker tone combined with outstanding effects work offers the viewer an epic tale, well told.
